Impacted Nations is an exhibition of visual
art and poetry that addresses Native communities adversely impacted
by energy development. It focuses on positive alternatives such as
renewable energy from solar and wind power.
Organized by Honor the Earth (see below),
this exhibit has invited Native American artists to submit works to
address these issues in their own or other Native communities,
focusing on current impacts or future positive alternatives. The
goal is that by bringing Native art and resistance into the spectrum
of mainstream fine arts and culture, artists can affect positive
social change.

HONOR
THE EARTH
Honor the Earth’s mission is to create awareness and support for
Native environmental issues and to develop needed financial and
political resources for the survival of sustainable Native
communities. Honor the Earth develops these resources using music,
the arts, the media, and indigenous wisdom to ask people to
recognize our joint dependency on the Earth and be a voice for those
not heard. Read more about Honor the Earth and Impacted Nations at

- Altman E.
Studeny
The 4th
exhibit in this series which showcases young “emerging” artist’s
work. Luke’s large-scale oil paintings depict the primitive aspects
of human and the juxtaposition of human and animal worlds. Altman’s
acrylic paintings are inspired by traditional fortune-telling Tarot
cards, but take an unusual twist as queens, fools and deities are
presented as depicting everyday people in their surroundings.

Black Hills Workshop Exhibit

Artists Reception:
Fri, July 18, 5-7pm
Free and open to the public

Artists from the Black Hills
Workshop's Suzie Cappa Center for Art and Enjoyment will display
their work at the Dahl Arts Center July 9-July 26. This year's show
is titled Peace. One of its featured paintings, Doves, is by Black
Hills Workshop Artist of the Year Sara Mellegard. Many mediums are
included in the show, including painting, quilting, and sculpture.
Coincidentally, 2008 marks the 50th
anniversary of the Peace Symbol, a fact the show's organizers didn't
discover until they had already decided on the theme. The symbol was
first used in a protest at an atomic bomb facility in Britain.
This year Black Hills Workshop also
celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. Black Hills Workshop serves
more than 600 people with a variety of disabilities including mental
retardation, autism, brain injury, physical disabilities and others.
The Suzie Cappa Center provides those
it serves with education in a variety of art forms as well as
exposure to the work of other artists.

Adventure from 10am-12pm for guided tours of the exhibit and hands-on
book art.

bookmaking, check out our
Bookmaking Workshop! |
In the unique exhibit, twenty-four artists
joined in artistic dialogue through the creation and sharing of handmade
and altered books. The resulting artwork is not always a traditional
book format.
The work began with one artist created the
basic format for a artwork. The book then passed to the other seven
artists in the group for addition and alterations. The pieces explore a
range of ideas, size and structure.
Be prepared to open drawers, unlock a
padlock, untie threads or turn pages as interaction with each artist’s
book allows for an intimate view into their world, much like finding
treasures in someone’s attic or closet.
Artists in this exhibition come from five
states, including Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia and North
Carolina. The artists include: Becky O’Bannon ▪ Holly Bishop
▪ Helen Brown ▪ Dianne Dorset ▪ Liliane
Francuz ▪ Laura Guinan ▪ Jean Gumpper ▪
Caren Hegna ▪ Helen Hoff ▪ Sonja Huff ▪
Linda Lyman ▪ Florence Alfano McEwin ▪ Sharon
Merschat ▪ Bronwyn Minton ▪ Linda Nix ▪
Amber Battista Olson ▪ Stephanie Jo Painter ▪
